Details
We're so pleased that you're thinking of joining OUO. We usually rehearse twice-a-week (Tuesday and Thursday evenings) for the first four weeks of term, however this can vary depending on the conductor, our concert date, sectionals, etc.. We normally perform one concert per term in the Sheldonian Theatre, unless we decide to go on tour in which case we would do our usual concert alongside any extras. There is no fee for playing in OUO but we do ask that you sell at least £26 worth of concert tickets, you may be asked to make up the difference if you don't manage this. The good news is that there's always a prize for the biggest ticket seller! If you have any questions about being in OUO please feel free to get in touch with our manager (ouomanager@gmail.com).
Auditions
If you want to join the orchestra, we run auditions through the university music society, OUMS. This means that a single audition is all that is necessary to be considered for the University’s major ensembles. The main OUMS auditions are held on Saturday of 0th week and Sunday of 1st week of Michaelmas Term (N.B. Sunday of 1st week is the day after Saturday of 0th week). Auditions are offered at the start of each term but available spaces in the ensembles can't be guaranteed. Details for the auditions, and sign-up sheets for times should be available on the OUMS site, and will also be available at the OUMS stand at the Freshers’ Fair in Michaelmas term. If you are unable to attend these dates then contact OUMS in advance to arrange an audition. Details will also be advertised on the OUMS social media accounts.
The audition typically involves a short solo performance (unaccompanied) – this can normally be from any piece you feel will show off your abilities well, and should last 3-4 mins. This needn’t be a complete piece; excerpts are quite fine. There will then be a short piece of sightreading to tackle, and that is all. You’ll hear a result within days of the audition, and hopefully be invited to join us to make music right away!
